Those who visit Horse Gate have suffered abuse and or neglect. In South Florida the foster care system in unequipped to handle the number of children in the system. These children, at times, have the bare essentials if they are lucky. By the age of 18, the children may have had more than 20 homes and parents, none of which are still in their lives. At 18 many of them are sent to figure out life on their own. We believe these children are starving for someone to make them feel worthy and loved. We at Horse Gate we have witnessed the healing power of nature and the unconditional love of the volunteers, in the lives of many. We provide free recreation activities to children in need. Many of the children are in residential facilities, or are in protective custody from their parents and would not otherwise have the opportunity.
"If men will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man." -Saint Francis of Assisi
"Children are not soul-less, unguided creatures made for adults to manipulate like chattel. They are spirited beings, complete at every given moment and age. They have differentiated minds, specialized abilities and unique gifts that give testimony to them and their Creator. Children look to us for guidance. They see us as symbols of love and hate, truth and deceit, selflessness and selfishness, good and evil. Children are not our subordinates. They are our co-conspiriators - breathing the same pneuma as us and contributing to a world far beyond present comprehension. Ultimately, in our webs of relationships, it is the children who will write, rewrite, and edit our scripts of life." -Anthony Gregorc,

Horse Gate adopts horses from the SPCA. As the children identify with the abuse of the horses, it is amazing to see the connection. The children are able to pour their love into the animals, as they trust them and feel their hurt. It is incredible to watch. Both the children and animals heal each other in a way counseling could never accomplish. (SPCA horse pictured above)

Tootie is our pot bellied pig. We are not sure of her age. She came to us because her family lost their home, in their these tough times. She has adjusted, is very friendly and loves attention. Tootie is thankful for her new home at Horse Gate. AKA "Slim"
